Creative Writing

I would love to visit your writers/readers group! This is especially easy in the North West of England and North Wales. But if you are keen on my books, please do get in touch!

My top tips if you would like to be a writer:

  1. Aim for a certain number of words a day/session. I aim for 600 but you could aim for 100. Some words are better than none!

  2. Find a quiet space and put your phone away. Give yourself a short target – maybe even just a half hour to write and do nothing else!

  3. Carry a notebook for ideas. They come at the craziest of times.

  4. If you’re not sure where to start, start with the bit you know. It might be at the end or the middle or just be about a lump of rock but if that’s the clearest bit, dive in there.

  5. Be willing to ‘craft’ and practice and take the knocks. If you wanted to be a potter of fine wares, you would do courses, break lots of pots, make terrible pots. Writing is the same. You have to put in the hours and it can takes years to find success.

  6. I never showed my writing to anyone. If you’re braver than me, choose someone who isn’t so personal to you. They will be much more objective!

  7. Enjoy the process! It’s a privilege and a joy.
