I love visiting schools and working with young writers. I am an avid believer in free writing – letting the ideas flow without restrictions! I am happy to run workshops with any primary age or secondary students in Year 7/8 and could focus on creative story writing or poetry.

I will plan closely with the coordinating teacher to ensure the children get the most out of the day I spend with them. This could include pre-visit fun tasks and follow up activities.

Ros’s infectious passion for writing was only eclipsed by her evident joy in sharing this with the pupils. They loved the workshops and staff could relax in the knowledge they were working alongside an experienced classroom practitioner. A truly memorable day of creativity!

It was an absolute pleasure to work with Ros as part of the James Reckitt Hull Children’s Book Award. She connected brilliantly with all audiences, both in person and via online platforms and was completely engaging… We will most definitely be doing school tours in the future with Ros.

Please find the attached links to some incredible teaching aids, all linked to my books. The amazing Scott the reader teacher has made notes for Digger and Me and Every Cloud. I have written some creative writing ideas for Digger and Me and the incredible CLPE has made a lovely set of notes to use with Every Cloud. Teachers - please do get in touch with me if you have any questions about my books!

School Visit Options

Option 1 - One hour

  • Assembly with up to 150 children

Interactive presentation with props, photos and stories describing my journey to becoming a published writer. Discuss reading, writing and the joys and challenges of both! I never assume all children love to write. I find physics impossible – we all have our strengths! Readings from one or two of my books and a discussion about the themes/motivations behind my writing. If appropriate, we will make up some stories together using props that I will bring in to school.

Option 2 - One Morning

  • Assembly and one workshop

Assembly as above followed by a creative writing workshop with one class. I can either work with a subject/topic you are studying in class, take a writing challenge from one of my own books or set a creative writing task as planned with the staff member.  Poetry, story writing or script writing are all possible. The workshop will be interactive, pacy and fun but with plenty of time for quiet, focussed writing. I will bring in props and photographs to inspire the words to flow.

Option 3 - All day

  • Assembly and two workshops

Assembly and two creative writing workshops. The workshops could either be with two separate classes and therefore repeating the workshop OR an extended workshop where I work with the same class all day. In the case of the latter, we could explore two different genres or expand on one creative writing idea.
